Teaching Artist Legacy Statement

As a songwriter, musician, performer, and Board Certified Music Therapist, I know firsthand the power of listening to and of writing songs. In my workshops I sing songs about young peoples' experiences and engage students to talk honestly about the themes in the songs, e.g. how they treat each other - including friendship, kindness, popularity, status, how their words and actions affect each other, and the pressures to fit in. Students can then develop strategies for making their classroom a more safe and welcoming space. I can also facilitate students to create their own songs about a range of topics.

Testimonials

"I like the stories in your songs because I think that stories like those give you the courage and will to want to do the right thing, and maybe try to change something you've done wrong. Or maybe even support other people who are having troubles."
- Middle School Student, Bolton Center School, Bolton, CT

"Your message fit perfectly with our character education program. The songs and themes were a wonderful extension to our lessons about diversity, courage, and peer-pressure. My seventh graders, who normally are not impressed with much, were glued to your every word. Your songs were the perfect lead to discussions that really made students reflect and think about their own personal code of ethics."
- Elizabeth Lazzari, Teacher North Branford Intermediate School, North Branford, CT

Description

Martin Luther King, Jr. said "œ songs are the soul of the movement." I agree! Weaving in stories and historical notes, I sing songs of social justice and engage students in discussion about the social, emotional and political context of the songs and of people's lived experience. Students also can write individual or collaborative songs about today's issues.
