Testimonial
"Having the opportunity to work with AFLCT has been truly beneficial; they've provided unique experiences that have positively impacted our students. Their professional artists are strong role-models who encouraged students to take risks, find their voices, and be confident young people. They assisted in the process of inspiring our students to discover their individual identities and be able to self-assuredly express and share their ideas and opinions."
Description
Dictionary Compositions: Exploring Art and Text
This residency explores the dictionary (as an object) and the multiple ways artists use words and text in their artworks.
This program includes:
-Slideshow presentation: Art and Text / Ancient to Contemporary
-Discussion & Exchange
-Dictionary and drawing explorations
-Creating Altered Books
This project is inspired by a "found" dictionary. Over two pandemic years, I painted and drew atop dictionary pages, responding to specific words with images and text. (See timelapse video, "B- Movie").
In this residency, students will "meet" old dictionaries, draw, write,
and participate in an interactive dictionary project.

Objectives
The aims of this program are to engage students in learning about text-based art, artists, found dictionaries, altered books, and drawing.
Students will be introduced to a dictionary "as an object," (vs. using an online dictionary): students will feel the weight of a dictionary, the sensory touch of dictionary pages, and learn new words by default!
Session one: A slide presentation offering students an introduction to my artwork and an art-historical overview of text-based artworks/ Guided drawing lessons.
Session two: "Dictionary Dating:" students engage with actual dictionaries locating words/Guided drawing and writing project based on words chosen.
Session three: Students work as a collective and participate in an interactive "dictionary draw" to create an altered book.
