Description

With her European violin and her Chinese erhu, Shaw Pong engages students in a dynamic sonic adventure exploring music and stories from different regions of China. Listeners will learn about the technology of historical musical instruments, the tonal nature of the Mandarin language, and one of the oldest folk legends of China.

Objectives

-Introduce the Chinese instrument, the erhu
-Teach the four tones of Mandarin, and the meaning of a "tonal language"
-Teach about the relationship between Central Asian trade routes and the prevalence of the horse-hair bow in musical instruments all over the world
-Introduce different geographies and topographies in China
