Testimonial

"Miss Doe Boyle, this is already the best day of my life."

— Zhane Owens, Fourth Grader
University of Hartford Magnet School, West Hartford, CT

Description

Let's find out how animals tick! Join author Doe Boyle for a poetic exploration of the rhythms of the heart—and the rhythms of lyrical language. This workshop introduces elements of the circulatory system. This interactive STEAM-centered workshop is designed for classes who have read Doe's book, Heartbeat, and may be studying animal classifications, environmental science; comparative biology/zoology, and other animal- and habitat-centered studies.

Objectives

In this workshop, I will read aloud from Heartbeat and will share the story of how I came to write on the topic of animal heart rates; how I researched each animal; what I discovered that most surprised me; and how I created the poetic text that describes each creature. With students, I will explore an anatomical model of a human heart and will discuss the ways in which the heart works as the central pump or “engine” that ensures that all other body systems can do their work. I will initiate student research on an animal of their choice and will provide links to activity sheets, films, and online resources and books that will align my visit with Next Generation Science Standards on the human body, particularly the circulatory system.
