Testimonial
"Having the opportunity to work with AFLCT has been truly beneficial; they've provided unique experiences that have positively impacted our students. Their professional artists are strong role-models who encouraged students to take risks, find their voices, and be confident young people. They assisted in the process of inspiring our students to discover their individual identities and be able to self-assuredly express and share their ideas and opinions."
Description
Day One Objective: Students will delve into the world of artist Henri Matisse and his techniques, particularly his use of nature in his collages. They will learn the difference between geometric and organic shapes, as well as the meaning of symbols and how they can be used to express individuality. Additionally, students will analyze the children's book "Drawing with Scissors" by Jane O'Connor and Jessie Hartland to observe Matisse's love for nature through the various plant leaves depicted. Students will create their own collages using shapes, colors, symbols, and nature to express their personal mood and identity. They will explain and demonstrate how their collage incorporates a variety of shapes, colors, and aspects of nature.
Day Two (Optional) Matisse's Botanical Installation: Students will create their own botanical garden, taking inspiration from Matisse's paper cutouts using native plants to create a small outdoor garden installation. Creating a serene and tranquil environment in the community that will restore and nurture the habitat by attracting and feeding pollinators.
