"Marvelous Metamorphoses"
Grades K-8
Sova Dance & Puppet Theater's performance "Marvelous Metamorphoses" accompanied by original music engages audiences with the use of dance, puppetry and mask work to colorfully portray characters and concepts with few words used except in the lyrics making them rhythmic memory come alive.
We journey through the life cycles of frogs, butterflies and bees utilizing the art of puppetry and music. Each audience member gets the opportunity to interact directly with the animal puppets in this performance adding joy and light-heartedness into the educational environment as we dance and sing our way through life cycles and transformation in nature.
The puppets are handmade by Sova Theater artists Justin Perlman and Adelka Polak. Performances by Adelka Polak & Kendra Garnett are sure to get everyone dancing, laughing and feeling inspired to learn about the environment. The original music is provided by Cynthia & Rick Quintanal.
"Blues, Blues"
Grades 6-12
"Blues, Blues" shares the complexity of the human experience in this imaginary blue world where two friends set out to put on a puppet show of the famous Shakespeare play "Romeo & Juliet." These friends can be forgetful as they try to accomplish the task at hand allowing for zany antics, but their care for each other and world around them creates dynamic emotional experiences. The original blues and jazz music in this performance allows for a unique theatre spectacle with very few words and strong visuals.
"Blues, Blues" was originally created by Masque Theatre's Larry Hunt and Adelka Polak in 2008 and toured the world for several years, including being featured at festivals in Bulgaria, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Taiwan and Turkey. Audiences get to view how the expression of a single mask can change with physical expression, gestural language, and relationships to the world all around.
Masks are one of the oldest forms of cultural expression globally in order to tell stories that seem to transform the wearers entirely. This art form is a universal language that holds the power to bring all people together regardless of language.

"Marvelous Metamorphoses" program objectives:
To display the concept of metamorphosis in nature through the visual poetry of puppetry. To offer a fun and exciting way to learn about science with a music and visual approach for young audiences. This program also has a bird mask/puppet that children think is just "so beautiful" and this imagery opens their minds to make mask-wearing as something that can be an art form.
Additional Learning Objectives:
I CAN see how visual art can express an idea within a story (using visual language to accompany the verbal language).
I CAN see how puppetry relates to dance, because it requires the movement of objects to bring life what would otherwise be a static sculpture when not used by a performer.
I CAN see how puppetry, dance and music depicted local animals & plants in the seasons.

Students will understand how gesture can impact our communication and movement throughout the world with people we encounter.
Static expression can appear to change with the movement of the whole body.
Color can have a strong impact on our lives, and blue is the primary color in this completed imagined world, which studies have shown has the strongest impact on people.
Students get the chance to see the art of masks in action rather than simply on a wall. This is an art form that has always been intended to wear, but most often we view it only on the walls of a museum removed from the culture that it was originally intended for. Museums take this art form out of context, so we hope to allow audiences to envision and understand what is lost when historic artifacts can no longer be practiced with their original intention. Our masks made by the late Larry Hunt are completely unique and a contemporary view of this dynamic, moving art form.

Technical Specifications
• Set Up: 75-90 minutes
• Break: 5 mins minimum- 4 hours maximum
• Strike: 45-60 minutes
• Program Space: A cleared stage or open space, 20' wide x 20'. While we prefer an elevated stage we have performed this on the ground level like a gymnasium with great success when the students can sit on the floor and be able to sing and dance together through songs.
• Electricity/Wi-Fi: We need a working, accessible electrical outlet for our Portable PA system within 30' distance of the performing area.
• Audiovisual/Tech: We bring a Portable PA system that we bring in and set up on our own. Natural lighting works and stage lights are always welcomed! If you prefer we use your audio system, then please put us in contact with the person who plans to run your equipment.
• Tables/Chairs: 1 chair
• Dressing Room: Separate room or access to an ADA bathroom stall.
• Outside Possible: Yes. We created this show originally for an outdoor venue, so we are flexible in our formatting and rehearse based on the space available. We cannot perform in rain as many puppets are paper and our audio equipment would be damaged potentially.
