Testimonial

“I have had the pleasure of working with several dance companies on projects at the intersection of science and art, and none have come close to SYREN in terms of ease of collaboration, raw creativity, and execution.”
Dr. Paul Sutter, Ohio State University

“Like anything deep and rich, I got something new out of it each time I experienced it. Science and dance were both well served by this collaboration.”
Dr. Allen Mincer, New York University

Description

Science in Motion is a lecture demonstration designed to cultivate a spirit of curiosity, conversation, and collaboration. SYREN will illustrate our process of dance making in general, while also showing how we use dance to explore subjects we want to learn more about like quantum mechanics! SYREN aims to shed light on scientific principles through the lens of dance and human connection. The way particles function at the microscopic level is vastly different from how we experience the world on a daily basis. Life itself is experienced through particles interacting within us and within each other-it is a dance, indeed.

Objectives

This program will provide students with insights around the importance of exploring curiosities, of not being afraid of taking risks, as well as an "inside look" on how a dance company creates. The program will allow students to be in conversation with the artists about how their own interests may have the potential to spark new conversations and collaborations in their own lives.

Technical Specifications

Space and a clear/clean floor for the dancers to move - Whether that is remaining in the classroom and adjusting the furniture, or moving to a gym, cafeteria, auditorium, or other open space. Ideal space dimensions for the dancers to utilize would be minimum 15 feet deep x 20 feet wide- we can use more space if it is available! Whenever feasible we dance in bare feet, so we need to understand what the floor surface will be in advance. Access to a Bluetooth speaker or sound system to play music (loudly if need be) for accompaniment at various times during the lecture demonstration. Microphone might be needed for speaking depending on the size of the space and audience.
