Testimonial

"The practical aspects of the workshop made it easy to envision how to apply elements from it into the classroom... The different prompts and ways of starting the writing process were interesting... I will be able to use today's information as part of my first and final units and as an extracurricular activity... It gave me resources and ideas to support the teaching of novels I use in class such as Native Son and Invisible Man."

-New Haven Public Schools 9-12 grade teachers

Description

Spoken word can reclaim power in moments in which it seems like it’s been taken away. In this workshop, educators analyze culturally sustaining spoken word that flips power relationships, then create spoken word that reclaims power, and finally learn concrete strategies for teaching poetry workshops that center student analysis, life experience, critical consciousness, and group connections. Teachers will learn how to integrate poetry, spoken word, hip-hop and slam into daily lessons. How to use exemplary contemporary authors and rappers alongside the fresh text of students’ stories. How to organize a student spoken word showcase or slam.

Objectives

-Learn to use poetry and spoken word to practice literary and sociopolitical analysis
-Learn activities and prompts to scaffold a spoken word creation lesson
