Students choose an issue that needs change now (past themes have included Immigration, Education, Health Care), then collectively devise a play to engage and move an audience to think differently about the issue. Students employ character, plot, idea, dialogue, spectacle and sound in writing new plays. They use Augusto Boal’s Forum Theatre games and methods to turn the audience into spect-actors and improvise ways to make change. This residency also has the option of using hip-hop theatre (a la Hamilton): turning personal stories into lyrically complex hip-hop monologues, songs, scenes and plays.
