Testimonial

Having the opportunity to work with AFLCT has been truly beneficial; they've provided unique experiences that have positively impacted our students. Their professional artists are strong role-models who encouraged students to take risks, find their voices, and be confident young people. They assisted in the process of inspiring our students to discover their individual identities and be able to self-assuredly express and share their ideas and opinions.

Description

THE FLOATING BUBBLE LAB: Exploring bubbles, art, science, writing and joy

What can we discover through a bubble? THE FLOATING BUBBLE LAB is an interdisciplinary, hands-on workshop (PD or residency) that blends art, science, movement, and inquiry through the playful and poetic medium of bubbles.

Bubbles—fragile, luminous, and temporary—become both an art material and a way to investigate the world around us. Students explore the basic science of bubbles, including surface tension, light refraction, prisms, and the color spectrum, while experimenting with bubble solutions, designing and constructing bubble wands, and observing bubbles through drawing, painting, movement, photography, video, and reflective writing.

Through guided experimentation, students ask questions such as: What is a bubble? What is a bubble made of? Why do bubbles form spheres? Why do bubbles appear rainbow-like? What happens when we change the tool we use to make a bubble? Students and teachers learn through observation, trial and error, creative problem-solving, and play—connecting scientific phenomena to visual and sensory experiences.

The workshop also introduces students to the idea of ephemeral art—art that is temporary, changing, and sometimes disappears. Students consider how we can observe, document, and reflect on something that does not last. Drawing, poetry, photography, video, sound, and movement become ways of capturing and responding to the experience of bubbles.

Adaptable for grades 1–5, middle school, and high school, The Floating Bubble Lab integrates Visual Art, Science, Literacy, Movement, and Media Arts and supports STEAM, HOT Schools, and inquiry-based learning. Students - and Teachers leave the experience with a deeper understanding of bubble science and ephemeral art, along with increased confidence in observation, experimentation, reflection, and creative risk-taking. Most importantly, the workshop makes room for curiosity, experimentation, wonder, and joy.
