Description
This workshop combines community music making activities with reflective exercises all contextualized by Beatbox Pedagogy, a radically accepting approach to student voice empowerment. Instruction covers the historical origins of the Human Beatbox, exploration of cultural contexts that shape our relationship to our voices, and applicable wellness techniques derived from the developing connection between vocal health and mental health. Group exercises include The Global Soundscape, Pass the Beat, and Instant Rave/CircleSinging.
Objectives
Professional Development Model Objectives:
-To teach and collectively learn the best ways beatboxing can be implemented into a musical mental health practice and advance inclusive pedagogy
-Learn the beatbox basics and various skill building group games.
-Define “Mental Health Practice” and dispel myths/explore various forms of productive, sustainable self-care (in line with organizational directives)
-Empower educators with tools and activities to practice radical acceptance of voice both in the classroom and within individual practices
-Connect beyond this workshop to better understand disparate experiences and develop best practices.
