Description

Students will be guided through basic composition techniques that include contour, melody, rhythm, and pitch. Each student will be guided through creating an original piece of music. At the conclusion of the workshop(s), student pieces will be performed by a professional musician. This experience encourages student empowerment, creative expression, and increased literacy in the language of music.

Objectives

-Students will learn about basic compositional techniques and how to write a melody.
-Students will learn how to express their musical ideas through a virtual program or using pencil and paper materials.
-Students will witness original compositions performed by a professional musician.

Program Length

If this takes the form of a residency, there should be 3-4 sessions (each ranging from 30 to 55 minutes). If this takes the form of a workshop, it can be from 60-90 minutes.

Participants

If in person, it is recommended that there are a maximum of 40 students in a classroom at a time (but this can be offered in back-to-back classroom sessions). If virtual, this program can have up to 400 students.

Technical Specifications

• Audiovisual/Tech: Independent computers or chrome books for students will be used if available but are not necessary (pencil and paper would be needed if not available). A projector, white board, or easel for the teacher would be encouraged but not required.
• Outside Possible: Yes this is possible. An easel or a mounted board with paper would be needed.
• Venue-Provided Supplies: Musical instruments in the space can be used for this program, but are not required.
