Testimonial
Having the opportunity to work with AFLCT has been truly beneficial; they've provided unique experiences that have positively impacted our students. Their professional artists are strong role-models who encouraged students to take risks, find their voices, and be confident young people. They assisted in the process of inspiring our students to discover their individual identities and be able to self-assuredly express and share their ideas and opinions.
Description
Mask & Movement allows students to express themselves through gestural language and learn how posture affects psychology along with how we communicate with the world. We explore how the art of the mask shifts as you move through spaces in different way in relation to the world around us. Our body positioning can share whether we are focused internally or externally and offer complex emotional opportunities for expression.
The students will be able to work with a mask and explore how this theatrical art form can share so much while using no words at all. We open the door to skills to being a strong performer, actors, presenter and observer of our environment in this workshop. The students get to work with partners to see how various mask characters can interact, so everyone will get to know each other in their new and unique light through this more historic art form.
The art of the mask has been used for centuries around the world in order to communicate something that is not always easily conveyed in traditional, everyday interactions. The art of the mask allows for transformation of the individual while opening the door for a new opportunity for expression that doesn't require any speaking at all. The students will create theatre tableaus and scenes together.
We work from the theory that "gesture + psychology = theater" and open avenues for helping students understand the importance of stage movement, not simply text. Teachers who would like to enhance a text with more dramatic movement are also encouraged to share that with us directly when booking the workshop as we could focus on specific characters and texts as you would like to in your classrooms.

Objectives
The objective of this workshop is to help people understand what they communicate to another person before they even exchange any words at all. Nonverbal communication is vital in understanding how we perceive the world and how we are perceived.
We teach techniques that help train students to develop a strong body image as well training the body to improve our mental health and well being. Breath and posture all affect the way that we feel as well, so we can train ourselves into working into a more positive position quite literally.
The mask offers the opportunity for unique expression for students who may not be willing to share in the traditional way. This can open new doors for drama and allow breath work to encourage stage voices. Even if we don't speak with our masks on we are learning breathing techniques through our exercises in this workshop.
