Testimonial

Having the opportunity to work with AFLCT has been truly beneficial; they've provided unique experiences that have positively impacted our students. Their professional artists are strong role-models who encouraged students to take risks, find their voices, and be confident young people. They assisted in the process of inspiring our students to discover their individual identities and be able to self-assuredly express and share their ideas and opinions.

Description

Shanna Melton is a Professional Performing Artist and Painter who has shared her work from Canada through St Thomas, VI. She is the author of a poetry collection titled “Unraveling My Thoughts”. For over 20 years, Shanna has curated poetry stages for her own Open Mic called Lyrical Voices, The Harlem Book Fair, The Housatonic Museum of Art and more. Shanna’s poetry conveys messages about community, culture, womanhood, love and family. Her performance can be complimented by a backdrop and introduction to her paintings.

Objectives

The intention is to inspire others to be self reflective and appreciate the value of sharing their lived experiences. It is to engage others in familiar stories as well as those which may be different but necessary to hear. Poetry has been a source of community building for this artist and it is created as she and the audience share in the performance experience.
