Testimonial
Having the opportunity to work with AFLCT has been truly beneficial; they've provided unique experiences that have positively impacted our students. Their professional artists are strong role-models who encouraged students to take risks, find their voices, and be confident young people. They assisted in the process of inspiring our students to discover their individual identities and be able to self-assuredly express and share their ideas and opinions.
Description
Participants will experience a hands on approach to puppet-making by creating their very own character. We focus on environmental awareness and social-emotional learning through our programs that make information presented feel like play!
Everyone has fun and may learn how to problem solve in order to complete their creations.
1) Butterfly Puppets: Marvelous Transformations = 1 hour total
We will focus on butterflies in particular unless teachers request a Pollinator Puppetry Program that wants to focus on more than the more commonly known butterfly/bee, such as the fly, hummingbird, bat or spider.
*Note that particular pollinators, including dragonfly, ladybug & ant), should include 2 part sessions in order to allow paint to dry, if teachers want to focus on these three mentioned here as well. The two part series allows for the creation of habitats as well. = 2 sessions @ 30-60 minutes each.
2) Spider Marionettes = 60 minutes
- use everyday materials to create a two-stringed marionette that students can learn to walk, allowing to development of focus while also utilizing both large & fine motor skill together here!
3) Ocean-themed Shadow Puppetry = 60-90 minutes
- Shadow puppets depict sea creatures to be projected using light from a single source flashlight and/or overhead projector. We get to dance & play our puppets in order to show off our work live at the end of the session.
4) Emotional Creatures = 60-75 minutes
- Brightly-colored delightful characters made from precut pool noodles that display emotions with the assistance of color identification. They help use have fun while creating our own unique little character to help us express emotions in a positive, playful way.
5) Woodland Creatures = 60 minutes
- Use natural materials and more to create whimsical woodland creatures that find their home in the Northeast. Please identify a list of creatures that might be popular with the students or your curriculum focus for this in order for the artist to consider which materials to bring most of.
6) "Feathered Friends" mask-making = 90 minutes (can be broken up in two parts)
- We learn paper cutting techniques to create feather-like textures for bird masks that each person will create using 2 pieces of cardstock. Everyone learns how to make something 2D into 3D using simple folds & glue. Teachers please note if you would like TA to incorporate a geometry lesson on quadrilaterals, etc. In the end with celebration bird diversity with presentations by participants that typically incorporate a dance party for all together for the finale.
7) "Rainbow Fish" = 60 minutes
- Participants will use paper and sticks to create a fantastic fish that is a rod puppet. We can use a simple sheet of long silk to create an ocean or river for the students to animate their new creations with to music to share with each other and move together.
8) Cardboard Creations = 60 minutes
- Students will make jellyfish or whatever they imagine utilizing this very common and sturdy material before we recycle it. Teachers can request a specific focus for this workshop. Portraiture is an option as well to make simple, flat cardboard masks and is a great hit with special education classrooms putting together the pieces like a puzzle. Painting is helpful for this materials and we do have a variety of alternatives, so teachers may want to book this as a 2 day program, depending on the focus & materials desired.
9) "Frogs Make Me Hoppy = 2 hours (split in 2 parts)
- We learn about local CT frogs/toads and their habitats, survival skills and life cycle while also being introduced to some frogs from around the world. We create a pond chorus to introduce the art form.
Please reach out to see if we have just the right puppet-making workshop for you and your curriculum that might need that extra boost!

Objectives
Students break down the artistic design process in order to bring their own imaginations to life in physical form. Students then learn how to operate the puppets properly in order to make them most believable. This play-based learning approach allows children to overcome fears and self-doubt while encouraging social development right alongside their peers.
We want the students to have an affective piece of art that can be used to create a character that is an extension of themselves while working as a creative outlet for them to share more thoroughly in more classroom lessons.

Technical Specifications
• Set Up: While this depends on the specific workshop typically only 5-10 minutes are needed.
• Break: 3-120 minutes (will need 5-10 minutes to transition from one classroom to another unless the school can set me up in one space)
• Strike: 5-10 minutes typically
• Program Space: Students need a work surface. Certain workshops we like to begin in a circle or group on the rug for the initial presentation of the art form and then we move to the desks when the students get ready and begin to create.
• Electricity/Wi-Fi: Not needed, although sometimes Wi-Fi can be helpful for certain music, a video or photos related to the content we are working on.
• Audiovisual/Tech: Sometimes a smart board is helpful or access to wifi, but I tend to print photos or have them on my tablet in case that is not working properly or want to work outside.
• Tables/Chairs: We need one table clear for supplies in the room. For "Emotional Creatures" we also need one presentation table, although sometimes I use one table for presentation first and then supplies to follow.
• Dressing Room: no
• Outside Possible: Yes. Sometimes wind can be an issue with paper-based puppet/mask-making and we want to make sure
