Testimonial

"Exclamatory gasps passed their [students] lips in suspense as Sybil’s Midnight Ride builds to a head in the show Our Founding Mothers. The children found the performance fun and thought provoking and hands were raised with a whirlwind of new thoughts, connections and questions about characters Monica Peterson introduced them to today. I am a satisfied client. We look forward to the next time our students can have fun with Monica Peterson."

Bryanna Mead Parent Liaison at F.J Kingsbury Elementary

Description

True tales of women whose courage helped establish this country including:

-"Sybil Ludington" - an account of the burning of Danbury during the Revolutionary War and how a teenage girl's midnight ride to warn the countryside that the British were coming to attack resulted in an American victory at Ridgefield, Connecticut

-"Hannah Handy" - the story of a Vermont woman's heroic actions to save her son and neighbors' children during the Revolutionary War

-"The Ghost Ship of New Haven" - during the founding of the New Haven colony, a mother helps her family survive

Objectives

Listeners will travel back in time to the founding of the United States. They will gain an appreciation of the accomplishments of women who helped to create this country; these accomplishments have long been overlooked. Participants will be treated to photographic evidence of what can still be seen today in their own communities (integrating visual information). Then they will evaluate the importance of the accomplishments and support their opinions with evidence from the stories.
