Description
Autism Drum Buddies (ADB) engages autistic students in grades two to five in a full-classroom, accessible, participatory music program. They partner one-on-one with a neurotypical, grade five Buddy for the experience.
Neurotypical students first meet with Bob for five minutes to prepare to accompany autistic partners to Bob's interactive drumming presentation.
The goal for the autistic students of the partnered relationship is to create a comfort level,, and to feel regulated in the group activity.
The neurotypical Buddy acquires leadership skills and empathy for autism’s behavioral challenges.
ADB augments social integration, emotional regulation, coordination and motor skills, creativity, and communication.
Bob's leadership recognizes and integrates autistic students' enthusiasms for music, vocalizing, movement, and dance.
In the full classroom, 30 to 35 minute participatory-drumming presentation, students, educators, and professional providers together with joyous songs and rhythmic patterns in a group play-along.
With prior notice to Bob, adult family members and caregivers can be invited to attend and participate. They will take away ideas and skills to create participatory-music at home and in their community.
