Testimonial

"Having the opportunity to work with AFLCT has been truly beneficial; they've provided unique experiences that have positively impacted our students. Their professional artists are strong role-models who encouraged students to take risks, find their voices, and be confident young people. They assisted in the process of inspiring our students to discover their individual identities and be able to self-assuredly express and share their ideas and opinions."

Description

Tailored to students of all ages, this workshop focuses on the central aspects of Flamenco dance, music, culture, and history. Students begin with a full-body warm-up set to lively Flamenco music and then learn the basic techniques within Flamenco dance: zapateo (footwork), braceo (armwork), palmas (rhythmic hand-clapping), and castanuelas (castanets). Throughout the workshop, students learn about the history, culture, and geography of Southern Spain. They are also exposed to extensive Spanish through counting, questions, and simple instructions. The workshop culminates with a short dance choreography that students can go home and perform, ending with an energetic “Ole!”

Objectives

This program aims to introduce students to Flamenco, and the art and culture of Southern Spain in a lively and fully engaging workshop.

They will experience and learn about the dance and music involved in the Spanish art, and will actively engage in rhythmic patterns through palmas (rhythmic hand-clapping), castanet exercises, zapateo (footwork), and full-body work, as well as learn a short choreographic sequence at the end of the workshop.

On an academic level, the program will introduce students to the history, geography, and culture of Southern Spain, as well as the different populations and migratory patterns that led to the creation of Flamenco.

Throughout the program, students will be exposed to the Spanish Language, and without even realizing it, will understand numbers, basic instructions, short phrases, and questions as they are intermixed into the workshop.
