The reception of Rebecca's program was beyond enthusiastic. People of all ages and backgrounds were completely enraptured in the music and dance they were experiencing. In addition to an outstanding quality of artistry, Rebecca is successfully able to engage the audience in explanations about Flamenco, fun and interactive activities, and she always invites children up to the stage to join her in a short demo.

Description

"Flamenco! The Art & Culture of Southern Spain" combines an exciting and colorful performance with interactive activities and educational explanations, giving students a hands-on experience of the Spanish art of Flamenco. With top-notch artists, including live guitar, singing, and dancing, students are able to see and hear the different sounds, styles, and emotions inherent in Flamenco. Through age-appropriate explanations, they learn about the geographic and historical roots of the different cultures and religions that created Flamenco, while also learning Spanish vocabulary and counting. Participants learn how to play the castanets and do zapateo "footwork," ending with a lively “Ole!”

Objectives

This program aims to introduce students to Flamenco, and the art and culture of Southern Spain in a lively, entertaining, and fully engaging performance/presentation.

They will experience and learn about the dance and music involved in the Spanish art, and will actively engage in rhythmic patterns through palmas (rhythmic hand-clapping), castanet exercises, zapateo (footwork), as well as learn a short choreographic sequence at the end of the program.

On an academic level, the program will introduce students to the history, geography, and culture of Southern Spain, as well as the different populations and migratory patterns that led to the creation of Flamenco.

Throughout the program, students will be exposed to the Spanish Language, and without even realizing it, will understand numbers, basic instructions, short phrases, and questions as they are intermixed into the performance.
